Decision Fatigue: Why Choices Get Worse Through the Day
A widely cited effect with a complicated replication history. The practical advice survives the controversy.
Is decision fatigue real?
Decision fatigue describes deteriorating decision quality after sustained decision-making. The original ego-depletion framework has faced significant replication difficulties and the glucose-depletion explanation is largely rejected. However, the practical observation that decision quality declines with accumulated cognitive load remains reasonably supported, likely through motivational and attentional shifts rather than resource depletion.
The claim and the complication
Decision fatigue proposes that making decisions consumes a limited resource, so decision quality deteriorates across a day of sustained choosing.
It became widely cited, often alongside the finding that judges granted parole less frequently later in sessions — a study that has since attracted substantial methodological criticism, including that case scheduling was not random.
More broadly, the ego-depletion literature it belongs to has faced serious replication difficulties. Large multi-lab replications have failed to find the effect at the claimed magnitude, and the glucose-depletion mechanism originally proposed is no longer credible — the brain's glucose consumption does not vary nearly enough to support it.
What survives
The strong resource model is in trouble. The weaker observation is on firmer ground: sustained cognitive effort is followed by reduced willingness to exert further effort, and decision quality does appear to decline across demanding days.
Current explanations favour motivational and attentional accounts — a shift in what feels worth the effort, and a drift toward lower-effort strategies — rather than depletion of a fuel.
Low-effort defaults
Whatever the mechanism, the behavioural signature is consistent: as effort declines, people default to whichever option requires least evaluation. Accepting the default, deferring, choosing the familiar, or doing nothing.
These are not random errors. They are systematically biased toward the status quo, which matters when the status quo is not the right answer.
Practical measures
- Schedule consequential decisions early, or at your circadian peak if you know it.
- Reduce trivial decision volume. Routines and defaults for low-stakes choices preserve capacity for high-stakes ones.
- Take real breaks. Effort willingness recovers with rest.
- Notice the default drift. If you are accepting whatever is presented, that is the signal to defer rather than decide.
- Pre-commit where possible. Deciding once, in advance, removes the decision from the fatigued moment entirely.
