Is multitasking bad for the brain?

The brain cannot process two attention-demanding tasks in parallel; it alternates between them. Each switch requires reconfiguring the task representation in working memory, which takes time and degrades performance. Studies consistently find that switching between tasks produces slower completion and more errors than completing them sequentially, and that habitual media multitaskers perform worse on attention filtering tasks.

What is actually happening

Genuine parallel processing occurs only when one task is automatic — walking while talking, driving a familiar route while listening to a podcast.

When both tasks require attention, the brain does not run them simultaneously. It alternates, and each alternation requires reconfiguring what is held in working memory.

The switching cost

Reconfiguration takes time and it is not trivial. Laboratory studies find switch costs of hundreds of milliseconds on simple tasks; complex real-world tasks are considerably worse, with estimates of several minutes to fully re-establish a complex task representation after interruption.

Beyond slowness, switching increases errors. Partially completed steps get skipped. Items held in working memory get displaced. Two half-remembered contexts blur.

This is worse for exactly the tasks people most often multitask through: those involving multi-step sequences where a skipped step is not immediately visible.

One counterintuitive result worth knowing: people who habitually multitask across media perform worse, not better, on tasks requiring filtering of irrelevant information.

The interpretation is contested — it may be that habitual multitasking degrades filtering ability, or that people with poorer filtering are drawn to multitasking. Either way, practice does not appear to produce competence.

What to do

  • Batch similar tasks. All email at once, all calls at once. Switching within a category costs less than across.
  • Protect blocks. Notifications off, tabs closed, phone in another room. Environmental control beats willpower.
  • Capture rather than switch. When something intrudes, write it down and return to the task. Capture takes seconds; switching costs minutes.
  • Sequence deliberately. Finishing one thing before starting another is faster than running both, even when it feels slower.
