Spaced Repetition and Retrieval Practice: The Two Techniques That Work

They feel less effective than re-reading. They are substantially more effective. That gap is the whole problem.

What are the most effective memory techniques?

Retrieval practice — testing yourself rather than re-reading — and spaced repetition — distributing study across days rather than massing it — have the strongest evidence base of any learning techniques. Both feel more effortful and less productive than re-reading, which is why most people avoid them, but both produce substantially better long-term retention for the same time invested.

The illusion of fluency

Re-reading feels productive. The material becomes familiar, it flows easily, and that fluency is interpreted as learning.

It is not. Fluency of reading measures how easily you recognise material, which is a different thing from being able to produce it when the text is absent. This mismatch — the illusion of fluency — is why re-reading remains the most popular study technique despite being among the least effective.

Retrieval practice

Testing yourself on material produces substantially better retention than reviewing it. This is one of the most replicated findings in cognitive psychology, demonstrated across ages, subjects and time intervals.

The mechanism appears to be that retrieval is itself a memory-modifying act. Successfully producing something from memory strengthens the trace and the route to it in a way that passive review does not.

Critically, difficult retrieval produces more benefit than easy retrieval. Struggling to recall and eventually succeeding beats recalling instantly.

Spaced repetition

Distributing the same total study time across multiple sessions produces better long-term retention than concentrating it into one.

Three twenty-minute sessions on separate days beats one sixty-minute session, reliably, for the same total investment.

The proposed mechanism is that each retrieval after partial forgetting requires more effortful reconstruction, which strengthens the memory more than retrieval while it is still fresh. Some forgetting between sessions is not a bug — it is what makes the next session effective.

Why people avoid both

Both feel worse. Retrieval practice involves failing repeatedly, which is uncomfortable and reads as evidence that you are not learning. Spaced practice involves forgetting between sessions, which reads the same way.

Re-reading involves neither, feels smooth, and produces confidence. The confidence is misplaced but it is pleasant, and people optimise for how studying feels rather than for what it produces.

Applying them

  • Close the book and write what you remember. Then check. This is retrieval practice in its simplest form and it works.
  • Use flashcards with spaced software. Anki and similar tools automate the scheduling, which removes the main practical barrier.
  • Space by increasing intervals. One day, three days, a week, two weeks.
  • Interleave topics. Mixing types within a session produces better transfer than blocking, despite feeling harder.
  • Tolerate the difficulty. If it feels easy, it is probably not working.
