Why Supplement Labels Are Confusing, and How to Read One Properly
The panel is a legal document, not a marketing one. It is also the only honest part of most packaging.
How do you read a supplement label?
Read the supplement facts panel rather than the front of the package. Check whether ingredients are listed individually with amounts or grouped into a proprietary blend, which hides individual quantities. Note the serving size — some products require multiple capsules per serving. For herbal extracts, look for standardisation and extract ratio. Percentage daily value is only meaningful for nutrients with established reference intakes.
The front is not the information
The front of a supplement package is regulated advertising. It can name ingredients, imply benefits within limits, and display badges of varying meaning.
The supplement facts panel on the back is a required legal disclosure with a mandated format. It is the only part of the packaging designed to inform rather than persuade, and it is where you should be looking.
Proprietary blends
A proprietary blend lists several ingredients under a single total weight, in descending order of quantity, without specifying individual amounts.
This is legal and extremely common. It is also a substantial limitation for a buyer, because it allows a product to include an impressive-sounding ingredient at a trace amount purely for label appeal — a practice known in the industry as fairy dusting.
The descending-order rule tells you something: the first ingredient is the largest component. But if a blend totals 500mg across eight ingredients, the last few could be a few milligrams each.
What to prefer: individually listed ingredients with individual amounts. This lets you research each compound against the doses used in published studies.
Serving size
Everything on the panel is expressed per serving, and the serving is defined by the manufacturer.
A product listing impressive amounts 'per serving' where a serving is four capsules is delivering a quarter of that per capsule. A sixty-capsule bottle at four capsules per serving is a fifteen-day supply, not a two-month one.
Always calculate cost per day rather than cost per bottle. The comparison changes substantially.
Extract ratios and standardisation
For herbal ingredients, two pieces of information determine potency.
Extract ratio (10:1, 20:1) indicates how much raw material produced the extract. A 20:1 extract is more concentrated than a 4:1, so 100mg of each are not comparable quantities of active compound.
Standardisation specifies a guaranteed percentage of a marker compound — for instance, ginkgo standardised to 24% flavone glycosides. Without standardisation, potency varies with growing conditions and processing.
An herbal ingredient listed with neither ratio nor standardisation is essentially unquantified.
Percentage daily value
The %DV column compares the amount to an established reference intake. It is meaningful for vitamins and minerals with reference values.
For amino acids, herbal extracts and most novel compounds, you will see an asterisk indicating no daily value established. This is not a red flag — it simply means no regulatory reference intake exists for that compound.
What labels never tell you
- Bioavailability. Amount in the capsule is not amount absorbed. Form matters enormously and is rarely discussed on the panel.
- Whether the dose matches research. A label may list an ingredient at 10mg when studies used 300mg. Only independent research reveals this.
- Batch verification. The panel states intent, not verified content. Third-party testing addresses this and is worth asking about.
- Interactions. Panels rarely list drug interactions. This is why the pharmacist conversation matters.
A quick checklist
- Ingredients individually listed with amounts?
- How many capsules constitute a serving?
- What is the actual cost per day?
- For herbals: extract ratio and standardisation stated?
- Do the amounts resemble what research used?
- Any allergens or additives you need to avoid?
- Is there an expiry date and batch number?
