Creatine and the Brain: Not Just for Muscle
A muscle supplement with a genuine and underappreciated brain energy rationale.
Does creatine improve brain function?
Creatine supports rapid ATP regeneration through the phosphocreatine system, which operates in the brain as well as in muscle. Cognitive benefit appears most consistently under conditions of metabolic stress — sleep deprivation, mental fatigue, or hypoxia — and in vegetarians and vegans, who have lower baseline stores because creatine is obtained from meat. Benefit in well-rested omnivores is less consistent.
The energy rationale
Creatine is not a stimulant and it does not act on neurotransmitters. It supports the phosphocreatine system, which regenerates ATP rapidly during periods of high demand.
This system exists in neural tissue as well as skeletal muscle. Neurons face exactly the situation the system evolved for: high, fluctuating energy demand with minimal storage capacity.
Where the evidence is strongest
Under metabolic stress. Studies during sleep deprivation, mental fatigue and hypoxic conditions consistently show the clearest effects. This fits the mechanism — a buffer system matters most when demand exceeds routine supply.
In vegetarians and vegans. Dietary creatine comes almost entirely from meat and fish. People who eat neither have measurably lower baseline stores, and supplementation studies in this group show larger cognitive effects than in omnivores.
This is the same pattern seen across nutritional supplementation generally: correcting a deficit produces more than supplementing sufficiency.
Where it is weaker
In well-rested omnivores with adequate dietary intake, cognitive effects are modest and inconsistent across trials. The buffer is already reasonably stocked.
Practical notes
Creatine monohydrate is the most researched form and there is little evidence that more expensive variants outperform it. Three to five grams daily is the commonly used maintenance dose; loading protocols are unnecessary for cognitive purposes.
Water retention within muscle is expected and is not fat gain. Kidney concerns in healthy individuals have not been supported by the research, though anyone with existing renal impairment should consult a physician.
