How to Actually Measure Whether a Cognitive Supplement Is Working

You will either convince yourself it works because you paid for it, or miss real change because it arrived slowly. Both are common.

How do you measure if a cognitive supplement is working?

Establish a baseline before starting by tracking specific countable behaviours for one to two weeks — misplaced items per week, name retrieval failures, or minutes of focused work before a break. Continue tracking after starting and compare at day 45. Subjective impression is unreliable because expectation effects and gradual change both distort self-assessment. Countable behaviours avoid both problems.

Why self-assessment fails

Two opposing errors, both common.

Expectation effect. Having spent money and formed an expectation, you attend more closely to instances of good recall and discount instances of poor recall. This is not stupidity; it is how attention and memory work, and it operates below awareness.

Gradual change blindness. Change arriving over weeks is genuinely difficult to perceive, because each day's baseline resets to the previous day. Real improvement can go entirely unnoticed.

Countable behaviours avoid both.

Choosing a metric

A useful metric is countable, frequent enough to produce meaningful weekly numbers, and relevant to what you actually care about.

  • Misplaced items per week. Keys, glasses, phone. Easiest to count, occurs often enough to produce signal.
  • Name retrieval failures per week. Instances where you could not produce a name you knew.
  • Minutes of focused work before your first genuine break. Requires a timer but is highly relevant for knowledge work.
  • Times you re-read a paragraph. A good proxy for the fog experience.
  • Afternoon clarity, 1–10, logged at 3pm daily. Subjective but consistent timing makes it comparable across days.

Pick one or two. Tracking six things guarantees you stop tracking anything.

The baseline is not optional

Track for one to two weeks before your first capsule. This is the step almost everyone skips and it is the step that makes the whole exercise meaningful.

Without a baseline you are comparing current numbers against a remembered impression of how things used to be, and that remembered impression is exactly the unreliable input you were trying to avoid.

Timeline for comparison

Do not compare at day ten. For any substrate-restoration formula, the mechanism has not finished doing what it does.

Day forty-five is a reasonable first comparison point. Day ninety is better. Compare weekly averages rather than individual days, because day-to-day variation is large and driven mostly by sleep.

Confounds to control

Sleep. The single largest confound by a wide margin. Log hours alongside your metric. If sleep changed substantially, your comparison is contaminated.

Stress. A high-stress period will degrade every metric here regardless of supplementation.

Other changes. Starting a supplement, changing your diet and beginning an exercise programme in the same week means you will learn nothing about any of them. Change one thing.

Season and illness. Both affect cognition more than people expect.

Interpreting the result

Clear improvement in your tracked metric: the most informative outcome available to you. Continue.

No change at day 90 with good adherence: equally informative. It did not work for you. This is what guarantees exist for, and it is not a failure of the exercise — it is the exercise succeeding.

Ambiguous: check adherence first. Intermittent dosing is the most common explanation for ambiguous results with any cumulative formula.
